The effigy corset was created as a set of stays to wear under a number of items of late 16thC garb. There are a few other patterns/extant items out there that give an excellent line, however I needed something specific to my needs.
Firstly my rib cage extends a very long way down, so there is very little gap between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the hips. This means my corseted waist is much lower than my natural waist. A long bodice is actually more comfortable than one that ends at my natural waist. The Effigy stays are naturally long like this.
The stays also front lace, which is now a necessity for me as side and back lacing is getting increasingly difficult to do, and I have no one to rely on to help me get into gear.
The tabs also greatly reduce the pain I have experienced a number of times wearing untabbed corsets. The tabs are cut in one with the boning running straight through which is much more effective than simply putting tabs on at the waist.
The materials also are of benefit to my health concerns, as the linen stretches wonderfully over time to mould to the body. The boning is from long cable ties and they mimic baleen well in how softly the mould to the body but provide generous support. The key to making these work is to use them as baleen actually was used: with no or very little space between each bone.
